Article 16: Freedom of Peaceful Assembly
Citizens have the right to gather peacefully and without weapons.
This includes peaceful protests, rallies, public meetings, and community gatherings. However, the State may impose lawful restrictions for public order.
Issues that can be addressed:
- Ban on peaceful protests
- Police violence against protestors
- Excessive permission requirements
- Discriminatory denial of protest rights
- Blocking labour protests
- Blocking women’s marches
- Blocking minority or transgender rights rallies
- Misuse of public order laws
