Clifton Seaview Development Project

What’s at Stake

Clifton Cantonment Board (CBC) is undertaking a development project along a stretch of Seaview Beach in Karachi. A project of such scale will have adverse environmental impact upon the quality of water and marine life as well as the human environment, as has been corroborated by environment experts. It is, therefore, imperative that it undergo the requisite environment assessments. Environment protection laws and regulations, including the Sindh Environment Protection Act, 2014 and the regulations made thereunder require all proposed large scale public facilities to undergo an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) to be submitted by the proponent of a project and to be approved by the Sindh Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) after a public hearing. While an NOC was provided for the project by SEPA, an EIA has not been conducted to date. The project is currently underway.

Current Status

PILAP has written RTIs to SEPA and CBC requesting for the proper environmental assessments to be conducted and for public approval to be granted for the project.
