River Ravi Water Pollution

What’s at Stake

River Ravi is the main source of water for Lahore and adjoining areas. The discharge of untreated municipal and industrial waste into the River Ravi has led to major environmental degradation of the quality of water in the River Ravi thereby endangering human health and the natural environment.

Current Status

PILAP filed a Writ Petition before the Lahore High Court against the Punjab Government, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency asking for action to be taken against the discharge of untreated water into the River. The Honourable High Court has ordered the formation of a Commission to find remedial measures. Stakeholders included in the Commission are the Punjab Provincial Government, industrialists, WASA, WAPDA, JICA and PILAP. The Commission has made recommendations for bioremediation as a process to filter the polluted water. The recommendation is yet to be implemented.
