Most of Karachi’s storm-drains remain perpetually clogged. In many instances solid waste is dumped directly into these drains. This interferes with their function in draining rain water resulting in massive urban flooding. Another factor that causes storm-drains to remain ineffective is irregular land reclamation on the banks of nullahs and natural drains.
PILAP has written RTIs to the Government of Sindh’s Planning and Development Department and the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board asking about the measures taken to ensure effective urban planning so as to have an effective drainage and sewage system in place, policies on waste disposal as well as measures taken to ensure that storm drains are kept clean and in working order.
