Korangi Children’s Protection Centre

What’s at Stake

A children’s protection centre has been ostensibly under construction in the Korangi area of Karachi since 2010. The project has an estimated total cost of Rs. 265 million. Millions already having been spent out of public funds and it has still not seen the light of day. State authorities are obligated to protect all vulnerable sections of society. Being some of the most vulnerable, homeless and orphan children require it all the more i.e. ensuring their protection from violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect.

Current Status

PILAP has written RTI applications to the Sindh Child Protection Authority, the Provincial Commission for Child Welfare and Development, the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Sindh asking about the reasons for the delay; policy and practical measures recommended for completion of the centre; how the Authority ensures the needs of children requiring special protection measures in Sindh as per the law; and how many child protection centres have been established in Sindh to date.
