A couple of years ago a video of a Black Bear in a state of zoochosis at the Bahria Orchard Zoo in Lahore went viral. Zoochosis is a phenomenon of repetitive behaviour patterns exhibited by animals that have been kept in enclosed spaces. It is a sign of stress in animals. PILAP wrote an RTI to the Punjab Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Department asking about the measures taken to ensure that animals at this particular zoo specifically, and across the Province generally, are treated humanely and given sufficient enclosure spaces that meet international standards as well as other healthy activities and companionship.
