Agreement to write-off Rs.31 Billion from K-Electric

What’s at Stake

News reports highlighted that the Federal Government in 2009 had struck an agreement with K-Electric whereby it had written-off Rs. 31 billion owed by the power company to the national exchequer.

Current Status

PILAP wrote an RTI to NEPRA asking the electric power distribution company whether it was aware of the agreement and whether it took steps to ensure that K-Electric, as it’s licensee, was not contravening the NEPRA Act, 1997, as well as the rules and regulations made thereunder in entering into such an agreement.  A similar RTI was written to the Ministry of Energy asking for a copy of the agreement, and the reasoning and accountability for the write-off.
