Children’s Protection Centre in Korangi, Karachi

What’s at Stake

A Children’s Protection Centre has been under construction in the Korangi area of Karachi since 2010 under the Sindh Government. To this day it has not seen the light of day, despite millions having gone into the project. Being the most vulnerable, homeless, orphaned children are most deserving of the state’s protection. This is not only a question of morality, but also a fundamental right under the Constitution, as well as being protected by international law.

Current Status

PILAP wrote an RTI to the Sindh Government, including the Social Welfare Department enquiring into the budgetary allocations, reasons for delay, and any measures taken to protect the orphans of Karachi. The Department gave an illusive answer, although admitting that millions had been spent on the uncompleted project since 2010.
