Collapse of the historic Bandukwala Building in Karachi

What’s at Stake

During the monsoon rains of July 2020, a part of the historical Bandukwala building on Karachi’s I.I. Chundrigar Road, collapsed. All buildings within the Cantonment area need to be monitored and investigated for safety of human occupation. Historic buildings are especially meant to be monitored.

Current Status

PILAP wrote an RTI to Cantonment Board Karachi asking about measures taken to ensure that the building was safe for human habitation and occupation as per the requirements of the Cantonments Act, 1924, the number of times the building had been inspected for safety, and the number of buildings that have been declared unsafe within the jurisdiction of Cantonment Board Karachi.
