Foreign Gift

What’s at Stake

All gifts presented by foreign dignitaries to state functionaries, including Presidents and Prime Ministers, belong to the state. They become part of the state’s Toshakhana and in no way do they become the private property of the state functionary who receives them. There were allegations around the former Prime Minister having sold some state gifts for personal gain.

Current Status

PILAP wrote an RTI to the Cabinet Division asking for details around the selling of the gifts. We didn’t receive a response, but upon appeal to the Pakistan Information Commission, the Cabinet Division sought to file a Writ Petition against any orders requiring disclosure of the information. It was later revealed, through proceedings before the Election Commission of Pakistan, that the sales had, in fact, been made.
