National Disaster Management Authority’s Involvement in Karachi’s Urban Flooding

What’s at Stake

Following massive and large-scale flooding in Karachi in 2022, the Federal Government directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to clear Karachi’s clogged storm-drains and to start a clean-up drive in Karachi. This is despite the fact that the Sindh Disaster Management Authority has been tasked with coming up with a disaster mitigation plan for the Province.

Current Status

PILAP wrote an RTI to the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority asking about the Provincial Disaster Management Policy and any disaster mitigation measures taken relating to monsoon floods.
